Law Commissioner

The Lord Chancellor is seeking to appoint, from 1st January 2015, a leading lawyer as a Law Commissioner. The role of Law Commissioner is intellectually challenging and offers an exceptional opportunity to have a real impact on law reform.

The Law Commission’s statutory role is to promote the reform of the law, so that it is clear, modern and accessible. Appointment as a Commissioner presents an opportunity to lead reforms that will benefit the public, the economy and society at large.

A Commissioner must be a holder of judicial office, a barrister, solicitor or teacher of law in a university. In this instance a legal background as a practising solicitor is desirable. The successful candidate will have responsibility for law reform projects principally in the area of commercial and common law. He or she will have a strong background in the commercial sector and be highly regarded in their area of practice. The successful candidate will also contribute to the development of proposals by other Commissioners in other areas of law and help to shape the future work and direction of the Commission. A significant part of the role is representing the Commission externally and involves influencing at the highest level across all sectors.

Appointment as a Commissioner, which is made by the Lord Chancellor, is a mark of considerable distinction in a lawyer's career, and very highly regarded within the legal profession.

The Ministry of Justice welcomes applications from candidates regardless of ethnicity, religion or belief, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity or any other irrelevant factor.  We are particularly keen to receive applications from women, candidates from a black or ethnic minority background and those with a disability.  Information about reasonable adjustments for those with disability is available at http://www.gatenbysanderson.com/job/gs15976
