This national Costs team provides practical, technical and strategic advice to maximise costs savings and recovery for Insurers, commercial businesses and public sector organisations. The team comprises of volume, technical and strategic elements making up the complete costs solution. Working within the Costs team is more than just negotiation and expertise encompasses the full range of courts, tribunals, inquests and inquiries, dealing with all forms of litigated cases.


The role

To manage a caseload of approximately 50 costs cases up to £75k in value.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Deal with a caseload of costs cases.

  • Ensure that the quality of work produced is to the highest standard.

  • Manage and negotiate client/costs disputes.

  • Draft bills, PODs and other letters and documentation.

  • Ensure that the client is regularly updated as to the current situation on matters.

  • Maintain time recording on client matters.

  • Attend court when required.

  • Ensure that care is taken to ensure good working relationships with internal colleagues and external institutions and organisations.

  • Be responsible for maximising the Practice's profitability whilst maintaining the highest client care standards.

  • Adhere to the Practice's policies.

  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of all Practice and client documentation and/or information.

  • Ensure that complaints are dealt with both professionally and promptly and in accordance with the Practice's Complaints Procedure.

  • Co-operate with the introduction of new technology and to learn how to use it in an efficient and cost effective manner.

  • Ensure that the relevant or mandatory training requirements are complied with and attend all training sessions as directed by your BCM.

The person specification
  • At least one year's costs experience with paying party experience essential.

  • Must be used to dealing with cases requiring a swift turnaround.

  • Experience of drafting bills and other costs documentation.

  • Advocacy experience.

  • Good commercial awareness.

  • Preferably working towards a costs qualification through the ALCD.

  • Approachable manner.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Team player.
