Discover the most complex, varied, important and rewarding work in commercial law

This is a unique opportunity to apply your legal expertise in a way that helps to defend Britain’s interests at home and overseas, and strengthen international peace and stability. Whatever their focus at any given time, one thing is certain for the UK’s Armed Forces - having good equipment makes all the difference.  You will join a vibrant specialist Commercial Law team who play a crucial role in ensuring the difference is made. They work on the contracts to procure equipment for the Armed Forces.

Based in modern, purpose-built offices, you will ensure that the Ministry of Defence has the best equipment and support possible.  As you’ll discover, the work of this busy team is incredibly varied. The experiences you’ll gain will be both fascinating and invaluable to your ongoing professional development.  As you might expect in a department with a multi-billion pound annual budget, you will have the chance to advise on a wide and interesting range of commercial topics. Working with a number of agencies across the Ministry, you will engage with legal issues surrounding some of the biggest contracts in the world, ensuring they comply with both EU and UK law.

As well as contract law, you could deal regularly with subjects including EU competition and procurement law, confidentiality and intellectual property rights, insolvency and Public Private Partnerships. You might also advise on the application of Transfer of Undertakings (TUPE), or the impact on procurement of regulatory regimes governing health and safety, or the environment. The work is never routine.

A highly motivated lawyer with a commitment to professional development, you will bring to the role powerful communication skills, client focus and the ability to make effective decisions. We expect you to be qualified to practice as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales. Having completed your training contract/pupillage (unless exempted) you will either have commercial experience or demonstrate the aptitude to learn this area of the law quickly and efficiently. Analytical and strategic in your approach, you are confident working under pressure to tight deadlines.
