Job Details

Manchester City Council, as relevant authority for the Manchester (City) Coroner's Area, is seeking to appoint a permanent, whole-time Area Coroner to support the Senior Coroner. Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals.

Manchester (City) Coroner’s Area covers the geographical boundaries of Manchester City Council. The location in Manchester of major teaching hospitals, specialist hospitals such as Christie and the Manchester Children’s hospital, universities, HM Prison Manchester, and Manchester Airport has a significant impact on the numbers and complexities of cases dealt with by the Coroner. Manchester also has large Muslim and Jewish communities with their own cultural and religious needs. During 2013 the Coroner’s office received 2888 death reports, opened 670 inquests and concluded 587 inquests.

This appointment will take effect as soon as practical following interviews, subject to any notice periods and you will be subject to the appointment and eligibility conditions within the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 and consequently have satisfied the judicial appointment eligibility condition on a 5 year basis.  You will have significant and recent experience of Coronial law and procedures either from experience of working as an Assistant Coroner or appearing as an advocate in complex Coronial cases. The Area Coroner is an independent judicial office holder, who is appointed by Manchester City Council, but is not an employee of the Council.

You will have a sound knowledge of all aspects of the English legal system with particular regard to Coronial law and the laws of evidence, the administration of the legal system and Court procedures.  Equally, you should have practical experience in the conduct of Court proceedings and will demonstrate the ability to handle highly sensitive or emotionally charged situations effectively.  Your exceptional communication skills are important.  You must have the ability to readily explain legal and medical terms to non-specialists, and you must be competent in dealing with sensitive situations involving relatives, witnesses, the police and the media. You should be willing to prepare and hear the whole range of inquests from simple cases to those fully engaging Article 2 both with and without a jury.  You will be able to work closely with the Senior Coroner, Nigel Meadows. You will recognise the importance of continuous professional development (CPD) and your own role in your CPD.

A copy of the role profile and additional information can be obtained by contacting specialistrecruitment@manchester.gov.uk and applicants should submit an uptodate CV and personal statement evidencing as appropriate the essential and desirable requirements for the post on no more than 3 pages of A4 paper in size 12 Font to specialistrecruitment@manchester.gov.uk by 4pm on 19 November 2014

Interviews will be held at Manchester Town Hall, Albert Square, Manchester on 5 December 2014, therefore, please ensure you are available to attend on this date.  Shortlisted candidates will be notified by e-mail by no later than Friday 28 November 2014, therefore, if you haven’t received an invitation to interview by this date please accept this as confirmation that your application has not met the shortlisting criteria on this occasion.

For a confidential discussion concerning the post please contact Jonathan Kershner, Coroners and Registration Manager telephone 0161 234 5566 or mobile 07908 712007.  The successful applicant will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Application Form and to provide criminal conviction information.
