Provide the legal support we need to shape the future of England’s seas
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is safeguarding the future of our coastal and offshore waters. As a Drafting & Advisory Lawyer, you’ll have an exciting opportunity to play your part in our efforts.
About the MMO
The Marine Management Organisation is responsible for the majority of activities in English waters. We oversee marine planning to ensure the sustainable development of our coastal and offshore waters, monitor and control sea fishing activity, enforce marine legislation and licensing, and carry out projects that help to protect the marine environment.
About the role
If you’re a qualified lawyer, this is your chance to develop your expertise by taking on a diverse range of work for our organisation. As part of a small in-house legal team, you’ll provide a high quality drafting service as well as legal advice for a variety of public, regulatory and environmental matters. The MMO is responsible for marine planning and streamlined marine licensing arrangements introduced by the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009, which require sound legal guidance. We’re also responsible for drafting Statutory Instruments (SIs) under the Harbours Act 1968 and for byelaws under the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009.
About the individual
To join us, you must a practicing barrister or solicitor with extensive experience of advisory work, ideally within the public sector. You’ll have dealt with byelaws and Local Acts before, and have significant drafting experience. You’ll combine these credentials with analytical ability, a collaborative approach and excellent communication skills. Organised and articulate, you’ll be capable of presenting persuasively and building good working relationships.
