Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority
Chair and Deputy Chair of the Appeals Committee
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is the UK’s independent regulator overseeing the use of gametes and embryos in fertility treatment and research.
The HFEA plays a critical statutory role in licensing clinics that undertake assisted reproduction and research involving the use of human embryos. A key component of this role is the need for a robust and impartial process to hear requests for reconsideration of licensing decisions made by the HFEA.
The Appeals Committee is the body that hears such requests. It is established by regulations and operates independently of the HFEA.
It will usually hear no more than one or two appeals per year, but these can be amongst the most challenging and interesting of licensing decisions. Members of the Appeals Committee are required to deal with detailed evidence in complex cases, exercising sound judgement in weighing up conflicting arguments.
The Authority is seeking to appoint Chair and Deputy Chair who must be legally qualified.
As well as current or recent experience of serving on other regulatory appeal or quasi-judicial, committees, you will bring a capacity for analytical thinking and sound decision making, excellent communication skills, and an ability to master complex and detailed material, often in large amounts. Crucially, you will have a degree of personal and professional integrity that will withstand rigorous scrutiny.
To obtain a candidate information pack, please visit the website http://www.hfea.gov.uk/9810.html or see the supporting documents attached. Alternatively if you would like a confidential discussion regarding the role, please contact Sam Hartley, Head of Governance and Licensing at the HFEA, at sam.hartley@hfea.gov.uk.
