About Samaritans

Samaritans has, for over 60 years, been delivering its services to some of the most vulnerable people across the UK and ROI.  It is the only support service open 24 hours a day giving emotional support, plays a key role in reducing suicide and alleviating distress, and is predominantly funded by voluntary donations.  With over 21,000 dedicated volunteers across a federation of 201 branches, Samaritans is a well-respected and highly regarded national brand.
We have been successfully undertaking substantial changes to our ways of working, structure and governance, to make sure Samaritans is in excellent shape to continue to innovate and develop its service to callers into the future.

The Role

We are recruiting for a Company Secretary and Legal Counsel to be responsible for the management of all governance, legal and compliance matters for the Samaritans Central Charity.  This is a high profile role internally and will suit an individual who has an interest in providing advice across a broad range of legal and governance matters, including property, contracts, data protection as well as governance issues more generally.  It is an exciting time to join us as the successful candidate will play a key part in helping embed our new ways of working across Samaritans, particularly in respect of governance.
You will be a qualified solicitor or barrister, with experience of company secretarial matters, a strong interest in the charitable sector, and have sound knowledge of charity and company law.  Experience of working in a federated or networked structure would desirable, as would experience of working with volunteers in leadership roles.

We are looking for a pro-active and highly motivated individual, with excellent thinking and communication skills (both written and verbal). You will be a team player with good influencing skills, and combine being able to see the bigger picture with an attention to detail.

The post is based in Ewell, Surrey; 30 minutes train journey from Waterloo and 15 minutes from Wimbledon. Willingness to travel within the UK and ROI is required and there will be occasional working in evenings and at weekends.
