We are looking for a qualified Solicitor with relevant experience to be responsible for having conduct of matters requiring the provision of legal advice drafting and associated work, relating to both commercial and some residential work undertaken by the Property Team.
 
Key Responsibilities

To work as part of a team primarily responsible for both complex and non-complex legal matters arising from the Council and external clients Property portfolio.

To ensure effective delivery of a comprehensive legal service to clients, whilst having regard to the sensitive and political nature of matters and ensuring confidentiality at all times. 

To assist with the co-ordination, supervision, direction and control of the day to day activities within the Team

To liaise with Directors, Service Heads and Officers as necessary in respect of the caseload of matters undertaken seeking appropriate instructions and providing expert professional advice

To represent Legal Services at working parties, panels and other meetings with Officers and outside bodies as required.

To prepare reports, briefing notes or other appropriate documents in relation to proposed, new or changing legislation and Council policies and procedures relevant to the caseload undertaken and assist in training officers.

To ensure that all legal precedents used are up to date. To assist the team leader in legal process reviews to ensure efficient and effective working practices.

To ensure that all key dates are diarised in the team diary so that Property, Court and Tribunal timetables are met and that professional standards are maintained at all times and that work is carried out to the standards set in Service Agreements and Lexcel standards.


To ensure the cost effective and professional conduct of pending or actual legal proceedings and disputes instituted by or against the Council.

To utilise and maintain systems relevant to the use of new technology. 
  
Requirements

The successful applicant is required to have knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and legal procedures that apply to the post with good analytical legal skills, including interpreting legislation. An understanding of public sector work relevant to the post, in addition to knowledge of local government law and administration, is also required as is an understanding of Lexcel and the principles of Customer Care. Understanding of risk as it relates to legal matters within the remit of the post. 

Qualified Solicitor/Barrister or FILEX with relevant experience in Property Law.

As a result of all this activity, Tower Hamlets has been ranked among the most improved performers in recent years. Indeed, we are one of only 10 councils thought to be 'improving strongly' over the past two years by the public service watchdog, the Audit Commission.
