The Northern Region of TUI Group comprises of businesses in UK & Ireland, Canada, Russia and the Nordics along with functional support areas including aviation and cross-market purchasing. It’s an exciting time in the region as the businesses have real plans for growth, helping more customers to Discover their Smile with internationally recognised brands such as Thomson, First Choice and TUI.

This is where you come in. Helping the businesses to deliver that growth is a key responsibility of the Northern Region Legal and Company Secretarial Directorate and this could be your opportunity to join a small but dynamic team who provide a trusted service that is efficient and lean, adaptive and agile and which fully facilitates and enables the reduction of risk or exploitation of opportunities for our businesses.

As Legal Counsel you will be responsible for assisting the Senior Legal Counsel – Aircraft Leasing & Finance and the Director of Aircraft Leasing & Finance in the provision of legal support within that directorate.

What you will be doing

As Legal Counsel you will be supporting the Senior Legal Counsel – Aircraft Leasing & Finance, the Director of Aircraft Leasing & Finance and the aircraft procurement team in its aircraft leasing activity. This will include reviewing, drafting and negotiating aircraft operating leases and advising in relation to return conditions. You’ll also ensure all legal aspects of deliveries and returns are observed and provide expert advice in relation to legal aspects of disputes with lessors.

To be successful in this role you’ll build trust and respect based upon your demonstrable knowledge and forge strong working relationships with key stakeholders maintaining sufficient independence to be able to offer arm’s length counsel while becoming an integrated team member. It’s also important that you demonstrate an understanding of the activity, strategic goals and long-term plans of the Aircraft Leasing and Finance Team.

Compliance

You will ensure you are aware of compliance issues and the compliance agenda and advise the Director of Aircraft Leasing & Finance accordingly. We’ll also look to you to take a proactive approach towards compliance issues and, where necessary, deliver training on compliance issues to the team.

Legal Risk

In addition as Legal Counsel you will be responsible for identifying, monitoring, advising upon and “owning” legal risk in relation the appointee’s area of activity. You will also identify and implement controls and mitigating actions in relation to those areas of legal risk.

What we are looking for

  • High order technical legal skills, and proven knowledge and experience in the field of aviation law
  • Experience of drafting, negotiating and reviewing aircraft operating leases and other high value commercial supply agreements
  • Ability to communicate clearly and precisely in English, to “interpret” instructions coming from the business and “translate” complex legal ideas into easily understandable advice
  • A strategic approach that always has regard to the underlying goals, but with a sufficient appetite for detail to ensure the job is seen through; both a “starter” and a “finisher”
  • A pragmatic, business-led approach that is alive to, and can evaluate, risk, but that recognises that some levels of risk are acceptable in the context of the business goals
  • English/Common law qualified (given the predominance of English law in aviation related transactions)
