Senior Coroner for the County of Cheshire

Salary £115,000 (+ 5.5% pension supplement)

Warrington Borough Council, as lead authority for the Cheshire Coronial District and in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire East Council and Halton Borough Council, is seeking to appoint a new full time Senior Coroner to replace the current post holder who is retiring in March 2017.

The post will be based at The Coroner’s Office, West Annexe, Town Hall, Warrington, Cheshire, WA1 1UH. Office opening hours are 8.30am-4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am-4pm on Friday.

The number of reported deaths during 2015 was 5224, and the Coroner’s Office held 895 inquests.


We are looking for an exceptional candidate with excellent proven judicial, leadership, organisational, management, IT and efficiency skills, as well as experience of managing and embracing change. You will work closely with the Chief Executive of Warrington Borough Council to deliver a high performing service that provides value for money. Collaborative working with local authorities, Police and other stakeholders is essential whilst at all times maintaining proper judicial independence.

You will be required to demonstrate knowledge and experience of coroner law and of basic medicine, have proven skills in conducting investigations and an understanding of court procedure. You will also need to demonstrate the excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal with sensitive situations.

The successful candidate will be a Barrister, Solicitor or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and satisfy the judicial-appointment eligibility of not less than 5 years’ post qualification service. You will be under the age of 70, have experience of working as a Senior Coroner, area coroner or assistant coroner and be subject to the appointment and eligibility conditions within the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (s.23 and Schedule 3).

It is desirable that the successful candidate has demonstrable experience of running or jointly running a coroner’s jurisdiction including carrying out investigations, case management, and conducting inquests.

Standard DBS clearance will be required.
