Description

We are looking for lawyers to join our highly regarded funds and financial services practice. The current team is one of the largest FS practices outside London with two partners, four lawyers and a trainee in the core team and 25 lawyers in the wider FS group. This is a strategically important area for the firm and we are looking for quality individuals with the potential to help support and develop the practice.
Our practice
We carry out non-contentious regulatory work for clients across the financial services sector and are particularly well known for our:

  • market leading expertise in relation to retail funds such as OEICS and authorised unit trusts;
  • strength-in-depth in unauthorised funds, including real estate funds and their promotion;
  • burgeoning FinTech practice where we have received recognition from the regulator;
  • regulated lending practice where we assist banks and FIs with product development and regulatory change; and
  • "buy side" work where we advise defined benefit pension schemes and other institutional investors on all ranges of investment products and services.

You would be involved in a wide range of high quality work with direct exposure to clients from the outset. Recent work includes:

  • advising an international financial services group on the restructure of its OEIC funds including an Irish UCITS merger and three separate FCA applications (and related investor EGMs);
  • advising clients on the UK's regulatory regime and the need to obtain FCA authorisation. Also advising on all manner of regulatory applications and processes including Part 4A authorisations, variation of permissions, waivers, change of controller and Principle 11 notifications;
  • assisting the FCA on its call for input on how best to support the adoption of RegTech (new technologies to facilitate the delivery of regulatory requirements) including hosting a roundtable event in conjunction with the FCA;
  • advising a major UK platform on an extensive project to update its terms and conditions (including related wrappers such as ISA, SIPP and third party products) in light of technology driven changes to the platform;
  • advising a major UK pension scheme on proposed pooling arrangements including via an FCA regulated authorised contractual scheme.

As you would expect we also take training very seriously and have a structured training programme for our lawyers in which you would be expected fully to participate.
Requirements
We are recruiting in response to the growth of this area. The ideal candidate will have excellent legal skills, good knowledge of regulatory fundamentals, be bright, versatile and have the aptitude to see and help develop the tremendous potential in this area in the coming years.
Unique proposition
We believe Burges Salmon offers something very different from our competitors, particularly in this practice area where many candidates will be looking to relocate from the City. Our one-site strategy means our lawyers are permanently based in Bristol and fosters a sense of collegiality and a positive working environment that we believe sets us apart from other firms. But don't just take our word for it! We were recently awarded the joint RollOnFriday Firm of the Year 2016 based on feedback from 4,500 fee-earners and non-fee-earners across UK firms regarding their pay, career development, work/life balance and management.
