Job Reference – JOB1306

Stockport Council is looking for an exceptional candidate who has outstanding leadership, organisational and management skills. In addition you will have experience of managing and embracing change as well as collaborative working with the local authority, the police and other stakeholders.  You will work closely with the local authority to ensure value for money, to create efficiencies and to manage the finance and performance of the service.

In addition you will have demonstrable knowledge and experience of coroner law and of basic medicine, have proven skills in conducting investigations and an understanding of court procedure. You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

It is desirable that the successful candidate has proven experience of running, or sharing running, a coroner's jurisdiction including carrying out investigations, case management, and conducting inquests.  You will also be a barrister, solicitor or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and satisfy the judicial-appointment eligibility condition on a 5 year basis. You will be under the age of 70, have experience of working as a Senior Coroner, area coroner or assistant coroner and be subject to the appointment and eligibility conditions within the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (s.23 and Schedule 3).

The appointment is on a full time basis given the high volume of cases; the number of reported deaths during 2015 was 3102, and the Coroner's Office held 659 inquests.

The post is based in the dedicated court and coroner's office at 1 Mount Tabor, Stockport, SK1 3AG. Office opening hours are 8.30am-4.30pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am-4pm Friday.

As indicated above, the salary includes payment for out of hours availability by agreement. A 5.5% salary supplement is also payable should the appointee join the Local Government Pension Scheme.
If you wish to have an informal discussion or arrange a visit, please contact Laureen Donnan, Deputy Chief Executive, Stockport Council, on 0161 474 3180.

Closing date: Friday 7th October 2016
Assessment / Interview dates: 16th and 17th November 2016
