The Middle Level Commissioners are a statutory corporation responsible for flood risk management and navigation on the major watercourses within part of the fenland area of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. In addition, from their offices in March, their staff provide administrative and financial services to 30 other local drainage authorities, which ensures a
constant, varied and interesting workload.

As part of the forward strategic planning and restructuring of the departments, a vacancy has arisen for the post of Solicitor to the Commissioners and the internal drainage boards administered
from their offices. The successful applicant will provide legal advice as necessary to the Commissioners and those associated Boards and will assist in undertaking the clerkship duties of these organisations.

In particular you will be required to advise the Commissioners and IDBs on the legal aspects of the performance of their functions and to participate in the day to day administration of the Commissioners and the IDBs.

The successful applicant should be a qualified solicitor and be/become familiar with the Land Drainage Act, the Middle Level Acts 1810-74, the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 and the other legislation and aspects of the Common Law which govern/affect the functions of the Commissioners/Boards. Subject to Parliamentary approval, the post holder will also work with prospective new legislative provisions relating to the Commissioners’ navigation function.

You will be capable of working to strict deadlines, be computer literate and be able to communicate effectively with members of staff, Board members, external organisations and the general public.

Starting salary will be dependent on experience and qualifications and will be in the range of £35,382 to £42,069 per annum. Admission into a NEST pension scheme will also be offered.
