About the role

The diverse nature of the Environment Agency provides ever-evolving challenges for our legal teams. Our Enforcement and Prosecution team undertake advice and conduct enforcement, prosecution cases, and relevant alternative disposals such as civil sanctions and formal cautions. Join them and you will have the opportunity to own interesting caseloads and make your mark in a national organisation that promises a good work-life balance, salary pension scheme and great professional development.

In this crucial role you’ll work across a broad range of legal functions and area facing work. No two days will be the same as you undertake the conduct of criminal proceedings and advise on all matters relevant to the enforcement of environmental requirements. Working with a team, you’ll ensure the successful delivery of the Environment Agency’s priorities. Responsibility and challenge will be plentiful as you play an influential role in the team, ensuring standards are met in a client-focused manner and handle challenges in the courts and through the statutory appeal process with colleagues and clients across the country.

About you

You will be a fully qualified lawyer (solicitor, barrister or legal executive with rights of audience in the Magistrates’ Court), with solid experience as a prosecutor or defence lawyer of complex criminal cases concerning breaches of environmental legislation or other complex areas of criminal or regulatory law. You will be an experienced criminal advocate with trial experience in the Magistrates’ Court and be familiar in preparing complex cases for trial and sentence in the Crown Court. You may also be a higher rights advocate but this is not a requirement. You will understand the Environment Agency’s ability to use civil sanctions in place of criminal proceedings and you will have the ability to advise upon the right regulatory response to environmental offending. You will need to demonstrate that you are confident and credible, able to combine first-class communication skills with strong analytical skills and an ability to pick up new areas quickly. You will also have a solid track record of influencing and persuading people at all levels, and the ability to interpret technical legal areas to a variety of customers and stakeholders.

We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; reduce the risk of flooding; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply environmental standards within which industry can operate.
