Gain valuable, varied and unique experience at the leading edge of government law.

An integral part of HMRC, our Solicitor’s Office and Legal Services (SOLS) provide legal services for the whole Department. We advise on legal issues arising from HMRC’s policy and operational work and conduct the Department’s litigation. In addition to tax law, our advice covers a range of general public law issues for HMRC, including human rights, administrative law and freedom of information. We also work in partnership with the Treasury on high profile policy and proposals for the Budget. We need intellectually capable, highly motivated lawyers with powerful communication skills to join us.

About the role

We have opportunities for bright and ambitious individuals to join both our policy and operational advisory teams and litigation teams. As part of one of our policy and operational advisory teams, you’ll draft legislation. Within our litigation teams, you will be exposed to tax tribunals, the higher UK Courts as well as the European Courts as you work on the most significant and valuable cases. You’ll move teams every few years, so you’ll have the chance to build up unique and wide-ranging expertise in areas such as business tax, civil enforcement, direct tax litigation, criminal law advice and rating and valuation.

About the individual

Known for your reliable legal judgement and understanding of legal risk, you will be qualified to practise as a solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales. You’ll be keen to work in a wide range of areas over time and build on your sound knowledge of the main features of public law. Strong communication and collaboration skills will be essential. Committed to using feedback to learn and develop as a professional, you will have the ability to produce sound analysis using secure legal research. Your enthusiasm for delivering a quality service to your clients will make you stand out.

About Government Legal Service

The Government Legal Service is the principal provider of legal services to government. Join us, and you’ll work in a unique legal environment on high quality, high profile projects. Our work is varied, intellectually demanding and, above all, rewarding.

Open Day

HMRC will be holding an open evening at its offices in Central London, at which you can talk to HMRC lawyers to find out more about what it is like to work as a lawyer at HMRC. The open evening will be held on 18th January 2017 starting at 6:15pm. If you would like to attend please contact iain.mcgavin@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk  with your name and daytime telephone number. Please note that places are limited so do register your interest as early as possible.

Closing date: Wednesday 1 February 2017 at midday.

Interview dates: 13 – 24 March 2017.

Company

Departments (in particular the Government Legal Department) fill vacancies when there are gaps in their legal capacity that cannot be filled from the existing population.

Qualified lawyer posts are open to barristers, solicitors and chartered legal executives who meet the professional qualifications criteria.

There are around 2,300 lawyers providing civil advisory and litigation services to central government departments.

Departments have clear policies surrounding the amount of time they expect their lawyers to remain in a particular post. This is usually between 3 and 4 years. After this time, lawyers considering a move are advised to work with their legal managers and consider what their next post might be.
