The role
Our General Counsel Directorate draws on its experience and expertise in the law governing legal services regulation, to provide a high quality service to the organisation involving legal drafting, problem solving and analytical thinking.

Working as Legal Adviser within the General Counsel Directorate, you will enjoy a broad and varied workload. You will provide a high quality legal advice and support on regulatory policy development and reform, governance and compliance issues and advice on best practice to the wider business.

Working on a number of projects, you will develop innovative solutions to legal problems and produce clear technical legal drafting. You will be keen to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and be open to sharing knowledge and expertise across the team and wider business.

The role may suit someone with a few years' post qualification experience, currently working in, or for, the regulated sector.

We are offering the opportunity to be based in our Birmingham or London office. When applying please state the location you want to be based.

Some travel will be required between the two offices.

Essential
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister
  • Experience of providing high quality legal advice and legal drafting in a regulatory, contentious or commercial environment
  • Knowledge of the law in one or more of the following areas: regulatory /public law or policy development, company/commercial/ procurement, information compliance law
  • Good analytical and research skills with the ability proactively to solve problems in a wide variety of legal fields
  • Able to work both autonomously and under supervision to deliver effective solutions
  • Pragmatic and able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with legal and non-legal colleagues

The SRA is the independent regulator of solicitors and law firms in England and Wales, protecting consumers and supporting the rule of law and the administration of justice. We do this by overseeing all education and training requirements necessary to practise as a solicitor, licensing individuals and firms to practise, setting the standards of the profession and regulating and enforcing compliance against these standards.
