Contract: Fixed Term part time (30 hours per week for 12 months)

Please note -this is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 12 months.

Heelis is the Central Office for the National Trust; it was named after one of the Trust’s biggest benefactors Mrs William Heelis, There are approximately 500 staff from across the Trust’s directorates, including the Executive team and the Director General, are based here.

Heelis was designed to be highly sustainable and has won a number of nationally recognised awards, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects in 2005, this architectural gem uses timber from our woodlands and wool from Herdwick sheep grazed on Trust farmlands, to help make Heelis a unique working environment.

About the role

 As a Lawyer within the team you will be expected to support a number of properties within a Region including working with and advising Estate Managers and Property Staff on acquisitions, disposals and a variety of leases and licence agreements.

In addition you may be asked to provide support on general legal queries associated with properties operating as part of a conservation charity such as; fundraising events, repairs, loans and complaints.

This in-house role supports the operational activities of the Charity and you may be called upon to turn your hand to new areas of a law and research. The work the team undertake is diverse and often requires a practical solution or to give assistance evaluating risks and opportunities.

About you

Tobe successful in this role you’ll have a recognised professional legal qualification and be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience gained in practice in the following areas:

  • Rural estate management, including leases (agricultural, commercial, residential), easements, enforcement of restrictive covenants, registered commons and the acquisition of freehold or leasehold property.
  • Have a good ability to think laterally and horizon scan, to seek opportunities and identify potential threats to the Trust’s charitable objectives and statutes.
  • Be confident in your own decisions and comfortable delivering quality work to deadlines.
  • Be a self-starter with a drive and desire to learn and be involved in a variety of work.
  • First-class communication skills with the ability to get on well and enjoy working with people on all levels in and outside the Trust.
