Principal Legal Advisors
£66,000 - £82,000 (2 roles)
London Westminster moving to Canary Wharf in early 2018

E-Serve is the delivery arm of Ofgem, the regulator of Britain’s gas and electricity markets and is helping to shape the future of the energy market - delivering better energy efficiency through renewable energy sources, and protecting the interests of energy consumers. If you choose to be part of our team, you can expect plenty of opportunity to develop your knowledge and experience, with the professional support you need to reach your full potential.

The E-Serve Legal team provides advice across the policy areas covered by the E-Serve Division, principally relating to the renewable energy schemes. As a Principal Legal Advisor, you will lead and manage a small team providing high-quality, expert legal advice in the relevant policy areas, meeting the needs of the business and offering value for money. One role is to lead a team principally advising in relation to energy efficiency and social programmes (such as the Energy Companies Obligation and the Warm Home Discount); the other is to lead a team principally advising in relation to renewable heat incentive schemes. These roles create opportunities to liaise directly with senior management, taking responsibility for coaching and supervising the team, maintaining high standards and highlighting potential legal risks. You will also have your own caseload, which is likely to include advice on the Gas and Electricity Market Authority’s statutory powers, functions and duties, and may include litigation.

You must be qualified to practice as a solicitor, barrister or advocate in the UK, or be an overseas professionally qualified lawyer demonstrating evidence of preparedness to sit the QLTS on appointment if required. Strong analytical skills, sound legal judgment, outstanding stakeholder management and a proven record of delivering clear, authoritative advice are all essential, supported by excellent team management and motivational skills. It’s a dynamic and fast-paced environment and you should be a versatile, quick thinker who can add value, working collaboratively across projects and teams. Knowledge of public law and the legislative framework in which a regulator such as Ofgem operates is also vital. If you also have experience of legislative drafting and/or interpretation, that would be an advantage.

Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:
•    Up to 30 days’ annual leave
•    Excellent training and development opportunities
•    The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits
•    Flexible working hours and family friendly policies
•    Subsidised gym and restaurant
•    Interest free season ticket loan.

Company

Ofgem

Ofgem is the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets. Protecting consumers is our first priority. We do this by promoting competition, wherever appropriate, and regulating the monopoly companies which run the gas and electricity networks. The interests of gas an electricity consumers are their interests taken as a whole, including their interests in the reduction of greenhouse gases and in the security of the supply of gas and electricity to them.
Other priorities and influences include:

- helping to secure Britain's energy supplies by promoting competitive gas and electricity markets - and regulating them so that there is adequate investment in the networks, and
- contributing to the drive to curb climate change and other work aimed at sustainable development by, for example:
- helping the gas and electricity industries to achieve environmental improvements as efficiently as possible; and
- taking account of the needs of vulnerable customers, particularly older people, those with disabilities and those on low incomes.
