ATTORNEY GENERAL

Salary package ranging from £109,000 to £130,000 p.a. (inclusive of gratuity)

(FTC 2-3 years with the possibility of extension)

The Falkland Islands is a British overseas territory set in a unique and dramatically beautiful environment in the South Atlantic Ocean. The Falkland Islands Government is seeking applicants for the high profile role of Attorney General.

The Islands have a small but diverse population, mainly located in Stanley, the Islands’ capital.  The economy is varied and dynamic and is based principally on agriculture, tourism and a well developed fishing industry.  Active exploration is underway for offshore oil and gas, which is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years   The Falkland Islands Government is committed to economic growth and diversification, continuous improvement of public services, and protection of the Islands’ unique wildlife and environment.

The role of Attorney General represents a truly unique opportunity for an exceptional individual to build on the achievements of the current postholder who leaves office later in the coming months.  As the principal legal adviser in the Islands the successful applicant will be required to advise the Governor, the Chief Executive and the Government on the full breadth of Government activities and carry out the equivalent role of DPP. The successful applicant will lead a small team of qualified lawyers and other support staff and will be a member of the Corporate Management Team. They will also advise the Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. 

Applicants must be a solicitor or barrister with at least 10 years broad based experience at a senior level including public/human rights law, contract and employment law, and criminal and civil litigation. They must have been admitted or called to the bar in the United Kingdom, Ireland or a British overseas territory.
