The Medical Protection Society is the world’s leading protection organisation for doctors, dentists and healthcare professionals. We protect and support the professional interests of more than 300,000 members around the world. Membership provides access to expert advice and support together with the right to request indemnity for complaints or claims arising from professional practice.

Our in-house experts assist with the wide range of legal and ethical problems that arise from professional practice. This can include clinical negligence claims, complaints, medical and dental council inquiries, legal and ethical dilemmas, disciplinary procedures, inquests and fatal accident inquiries.

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for a Claims Manager to join us in a permanent role, based in our London office. This is a truly exceptional opportunity for an experienced Clinical Negligence solicitor to make a move in-house, away from heavy billing targets and into a culture that encourages you to put the member first.

The purpose of this role is to handle claims made against our members in the Caribbean, South East Asia, Hong Kong and other international locations.

The post-holder will have the advantage of working closely with our in-house medical experts, quantum advisers, costs lawyers and technical experts, all forming part of a highly specialist team, full of expertise.

You will report into one of our Claims leads, and will have the support of our Claims Assistants, Audio Typists and Operations Support Administrators.

A Summary of duties:

  • To review and analyse all medical / dental records, reports and data provided by members and third parties, and undertake a full legal review to establish breach, causation and propose a strategy.
  • Ensure than an accurate first claims estimate is entered and that initial claims data entries are complete and accurate.
  • Be pro-active in the resolution of pre-claims and claims, applying principles of justice and equity at all times, ensuring that MPS is perceived as an organisation which protects its members but also applies sound judgement and commercial good sense.
  • Monitor, identify and highlight trends and emerging patterns in the type and behaviours of claims and claimant firms
  • Keep up to date with relevant professional knowledge

Experience & Knowledge:

Essential

  • Extensive claims management or litigation experience with a background in clinical negligence
  • IT literacy, with practical experience of using IT as an analytical/case management tool
  • The ability to critically determine the cost effective nature and extent of any investigation required and to competently set and implement case strategy through to resolution
  • Clinical Negligence, MDO or High Value/Cat PI experience.

Desirable

  • Experience from a Mutual or NFP organisation
  • This role would suit someone with around 5-7+ years PQE

If you would like to apply for this position please send a CV to careers@medicalprotection.org for the attention of Sarah Speechly.

Due to the urgency of this role, we may appoint prior to the closing date.

Whilst we will endeavour to respond to all candidates, in the event of a high number of applications we may not be able to respond to everyone.
