Lancaster City Council is placed at the heart of one of the most beautiful and geographically diverse parts of the country. The urban centres of Lancaster and Morecambe, each with their own distinctive characters, sit within an extensive rural area, which includes areas of outstanding natural beauty. The District is culturally and historically rich, with a wealth of untapped potential, and has recently been placed in the top 10 best places to live in the UK.

The recent opening of the Bay Gateway, coupled with closer links being forged with the two local universities and businesses, places the Lancaster District in a prime position to capitalise on its many economic advantages.

At this pivotal time for the District, Lancaster City Council is seeking an experienced and innovative legal professional who, as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, is keen to move into a role where they will be central to the shaping of both the Council and the District.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to a solution focussed individual with a desire to innovate and improve, who will play a crucial role in ensuring that Lancaster City Council delivers on a wide range of challenging priorities, including the Bailrigg Garden Village and the Canal Corridor Development, whilst maximising the Council’s assets.

As legal advisor to the Council and Monitoring Officer you will provide the framework through which the Council conducts its activities, providing high quality, robust legal analysis which combines securing commercial advantage with delivering public benefit, in support of our modernisation agenda.

You will provide leadership and strategic direction to the Legal and Governance Service, which encompasses Legal Service, Democratic Service, incorporating Elections, Information Governance and Risk Management. You must have a strong track record of practical action and delivery, coupled with the drive and demonstrable ability to implement service improvements.

The ability to work effectively within a complex political environment and engage with Elected Members and Officers is essential. In order to be considered for this role you will have substantial post-qualification experience, ideally coupled with significant experience at senior level in a complex organisation.

For an informal discussion please contact Susan Parsonage – Chief Executive on 01524 582011.
