UCL Faculty of Laws

UCL Centre for Access to Justice

Housing/Social Welfare Solicitor

The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,056 - £41,163 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

The Faculty of Laws at UCL has been one of the leading centres of legal education in the world. Recognised as offering an outstanding educational experience to our students, we combine a strong theoretical foundation in the law with practical teaching from world-leading academics and practitioners.

Ahead of UCL’s expansion into East London on a new campus on the Olympic site, the CAJ has opened the UCL Legal Advice Clinic (UCL LAC) a drop-in social welfare law clinic in Newham. Currently the Clinic is co-located with the Liberty Bridge Road Practice within the Sir Ludwig Guttmann Centre for Health and Wellbeing. The Clinic offers generalist legal advice together with specialist advice, casework and representation in welfare benefits and areas of housing law where legal aid is no longer available.

We now seek an experienced housing/social welfare solicitor to assist in expanding the work of the UCL LAC.

Applicants are expected to have significant and recent post-qualification casework, representation and advocacy experience in social welfare law, in particular housing law. The successful appointee will be a qualified solicitor or barrister (England & Wales or Scotland) with at least 2 years of professional qualified experience working as a solicitor or barrister. We are seeking a candidate who understands the needs of the vulnerable client group that we work with and can balance their needs with supervising students working on their cases.

Successful applicants will also demonstrate familiarity with and commitment to the provision of pro bono legal assistance to members of the local community and have the ability to supervise, teach and advise students.

We particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented within UCL at this level.
