Summary

As a Lawyer within a friendly and collaborative legal team you will look after the legal needs of a number of properties within one or more of the National Trust’s Regions dealing with transactions (e.g. acquisitions, leases and licences) and working with other professional staff by helping them with a fascinating range of legal queries from properties operating within a conservation charity such as; covenants, fundraising, entertainment, intellectual property, loans of precious works of art and relations with third parties.

Heelis is the Central Office for the National Trust; it was named after one of the Trust’s biggest benefactors Mrs William Heelis, There are approximately 500 staff from across the Trust’s directorates, including the Executive team and the Director General, are based here.

Heelis was designed to be highly sustainable and has won a number of nationally recognised awards.Designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects in 2005, this architectural gem uses timber from our woodlands and wool from Herdwick sheep grazed on Trust farmlands, to help make Heelis a unique working environment.

What you'll be doing

As part of your role you may also run or help with training events for the Charity’s staff, review proposed legislation and consultations from central Government and you will enjoy turning your hand to new areas of law and research. Our work is diverse and often requires a practical solution or giving help in evaluating risks and opportunities.

Working as part of a large in-house team for a Charity provides new opportunities, job satisfaction and a real sense of contributing to a cause you believe in. Attitude and commitment to the Trust and the charitable sector are just as important as your experience or background.

Who we're looking for

You’ll have a recognised professional legal qualification and be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience gained in practice in some or all of the following property law areas: rural estate management, including leases (agricultural, commercial, residential), easements, enforcement of restrictive covenants, registered commons and the acquisition of freehold or leasehold property.

Whatever your background you’ll enjoy working in a team with a drive and desire to learn and be involved in a wide variety of work. Positive and enthusiastic, even under pressure, you are confident in your own decisions and comfortable delivering excellent quality work to deadlines.

Your communication skills are first class and you are credible both on paper and in person. You enjoy working with people, whether in your team, liaising with staff at all levels or speaking to people outside of the Trust and people love working with you.
