About the Organisation

The MMO is the Government’s strategic delivery partner in the marine area, reconciling conflicting demands and pressures, including through the introduction of a new integrated system of marine planning, streamlined marine licensing arrangements and fisheries management.

The MMO’s decisions are based on the best available evidence and analysis and are supported by access to sound legal advice. The MMO also undertakes effective risk-based enforcement of its regulatory responsibilities in respect of its statutory and delegated functions.

About the role

A further opportunity has arisen to join the MMO’s in house legal team. The post holder will provide robust and innovative legal advice that will support and assist the MMO to operate lawfully and proportionately.  A broad legal experience is required, preferably gained in a regulatory regime however a keen intellect, willingness to adapt and develop in new and contentious areas of law, and work as part of a team are equally important.

The post holder will provide advice on, and conduct civil and public law litigation on behalf of the Organisation and will be expected to provide legal support to the whole of the MMO on a diverse range of legal matters. As part of this role the post holder will need to gain an understanding of the existing regulatory regime and the practical implications and impact on the Organisation of exiting the EU by working closely with Defra and other Government colleagues.

The work is varied and challenging and will offer you a unique chance to extend and develop your knowledge and expertise across a wide range of Marine and Environmental issues and there may be the opportunity to provide enabling advice to the UK’s overseas territories.

The role is offered on a permanent basis subject to satisfactory completion of probation and will be based at our Newcastle office.  You will be required to travel and this will involve some overnight stays.
