Make a difference at the heart of Government
The Government is recruiting exceptional lawyers to help shape the country’s tax laws and lead the fight against tax avoidance.
The work of HMRC lawyers impacts upon the lives of millions. With a case load that is both high profile and high value – including cases where more than £1bn of tax is at stake – your efforts will provide funds for key public services.

Our work
Legal work at HMRC is cutting edge. We won both The Lawyer and Legal 500 in-house public sector team of the year awards in 2013.
Legal work at HMRC is challenging but rewarding. As an HMRC advisory lawyer you will have the opportunity to work in different teams on everything from personal and business tax to criminal law issues and commercial contracts, becoming a source of technical and public law expertise. You are also likely to be involved in advising on and drafting key legislation – effectively making the law. As an HMRC litigation lawyer you will manage top-end cases before courts ranging from the Tax Tribunals to the Supreme Court.

What we’re looking for
We’re looking for high potential and high calibre lawyers to join the team. Whether experienced or newly qualified, you will have a strong intellect, an ability to master new areas of law quickly and strong delivery and team-working skills.

We would particularly welcome lawyers with experience of tax and/or litigation. However, tax experience is not essential. Although you will have real responsibility from day one, you will be provided with full training and support. You will also get the benefits that come with working in the Civil Service, such as a strong network of peers, and an attractive pension package and annual leave allowances.

Posts will be based in London and Manchester.

Salaries
£54,461 London; £48,389 Manchester for lawyers with 2 years + PQE (with the possibility of higher starting pay for strong candidates)
If you have less than two years PQE, you will be appointed as a Legal Officer on a salary of £42,000 London and £38,000 Manchester.

These are non-reserved posts. For full details on nationality requirements, please refer to https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nationality-rules
