The Electoral Commission is the independent body that regulates party and election finance, sets standards for well-run elections and encourages people to register to vote. The Legal team works to support delivery of all the Commission’s objectives.

This is an exciting time to work at the Commission.  In addition to its role at the forthcoming general election the Commission has a challenging programme of electoral modernisation and regulation over the next few years.

This role provides an opportunity to join a dedicated and enthusiastic team.

You will be involved in a wide range of legal work encompassing both electoral law and practice and political finance and regulation legal work. The post holder will also be required to provide data protection and freedom of information law advice, and advice on other cross-Commission projects.

This role requires strong legal analytical skills, sound legal knowledge-base and the ability to confidently and effectively interpret and apply new and complex legislation. You will have a strong understanding and experience of advising on public law. Experience of government (central or local) or related organisations with governmental type duties would be advantageous as would a background in regulatory or criminal law.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working in a fast paced legal environment and become involved in often novel and high profile issues affecting the democratic process in the UK.

The Electoral Commission offers excellent terms and conditions, including flexible working hours and the opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements (dependent on scheme rules) which include a valuable range of benefits.
