A rare and unmissable new role has arisen with a top tier firm based in Newcastle. The firm specialises in shipping law and is in search of a Solicitor to join their FD&D Team. Although their preference would be to recruit someone with this type of experience, they are aware that Solicitors with shipping experience are very few and far between and are therefore happy to consider Solicitors who have a general commercial litigation background and a keenness to learn a new area of law.

FD&D is a legal costs insurance that covers a wide variety of shipping disputes where the liability involved is not otherwise insured; basically, the team pursues and defends such claims and pays certain associated costs. The FD&D team is comprised exclusively of lawyers and so, in addition to handling claims and pursuing arbitrations, the team also assists their Members by providing general legal support and assistance in chartering, operational, insurance and other claims matters.

The Role:

The role is varied and will include running and supervising a diverse range of cases, often worldwide and in numerous jurisdictions. These cases will primarily involve contractual disputes, but may extend to tortuous and other liabilities.

You will be handling your own caseload, however will receive fill support of a highly experienced in house team and external advisers. You will pursue and defend a diverse range of claims and advise Members on many differing issues impacting the shipping industry. You will be required to travel internationally from time to time, to meet with members and third parties involved in the claims. Due to the nature of shipping, when necessary you will be required to work outside of office hours including weekends and public holidays if an urgent matter arises.

Those further on in their career will continue to meet new and complex matters, and work to support and train their colleagues.

The global nature of the work means that you will also have the opportunity to travel on case or Member visits.

The Candidate:

The firm is looking to recruit a qualified Solicitor, however the firm is specifically looking for candidates with excellent academics. Candidates with shipping experience are few and far between and the firm is therefore happy to consider applicants with a more general commercial litigation background, but who have a keenness to learn.
