Job Details

Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide, which we aim to achieve through our current strategy: Working Together to Reduce Suicide. The Samaritans Legal & Governance directorate aims to enable Samaritans to better achieve this strategy, by providing guidance, support and expertise to Samaritans volunteers and staff in the areas of legal, governance, compliance and risk.

We are looking for a new in-house Legal Counsel to play a key, central role in contributing to this aim.

This is a particularly exciting time to be joining Samaritans. It is a period of unprecedented change for the organisation, as we progress our goal of being there for everyone, and work to improve our service, access, influence and evidence. All within a new, more cohesive governance structure. Reporting to the General Counsel & Company Secretary (who reports to the Chief Executive Officer), the Legal Counsel (Risk & Compliance) will be directly involved in this change and development, providing relevant and pragmatic advice across the organisation’s central office and 201 branches throughout the UK and Ireland. In cooperation with key individuals, teams and board committees, you will provide key input to support exciting new initiatives and products, such as instant messaging and online outreach, as well as developing organisation-wide strategies to deal with risk and legal compliance.

A qualified solicitor, barrister or legal executive, you may have developed your skills in private practice, in-house in the charity or commercial sectors, or a combination thereof. Along with sound and proven legal skills, you will be a strong communicator with a collaborative and supportive approach, providing expert guidance and counsel at a time and in a way which enables others to achieve their objectives. You will also have experience of thinking critically and strategically in assessing and designing strategies to address risk and compliance issues. Whatever you are working on, you will be able to lead confidently on your own initiatives and projects, as well as working collaboratively with others in the team and wider organisation.

If you are looking to use your proven legal skills to enable Samaritans to be there for more people during difficult times and make a real difference in a rewarding environment, this would be the ideal opportunity.

Our Location

Our Central Office is a converted mill in Ewell, Surrey, which is just over 30-minutes by train from Waterloo and 15 minutes from Wimbledon. For the right candidate, there is also the potential to work flexibly from central London and/or home.

As an employer, we offer a good range of benefits, including 25 days’ holiday, Health Cash Plan, contributory pension and interest-free season ticket loans.
