The Commission enforces equality legislation on age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. It encourages compliance with the Human Rights Act 1998 and is accredited by the UN as an ‘A status’ National Human Rights Institution.

Overview of the role

If you want to make a difference and improve the lives of everyone in the country, the Equality and Human Rights Commission needs to hear from you. The work we do affects everyone and is about making Britain fairer. Whether that’s fighting for better rights for disabled people, progress on race or gender equality, or ending discrimination at work, we are the leading voice that makes change happen.

Working in our Legal Directorate, you will provide specialist technical expertise and advice on equality and human rights law and litigation. You will build on the success of our recent pilot assisting cases involving disabled people’s rights and will run two similar schemes, the first relating to discrimination in education.  Your work will predominantly focus on these schemes but you may also work on other litigation and enforcement matters as required.

To be successful in this exciting yet challenging role, you will be a qualified solicitor or barrister entitled to practise in England and Wales with at least six months post-qualification experience. You will report to a legal Principal and will work independently when required or with minimal or no supervision depending on the task within agreed delegated limits and supervisory frameworks. The core professional skills for this role include:

• ability to conduct litigation and enforcement legal work, mainly autonomously but seeking supervisory support where required

• ability to analyse and investigate evidence to assess compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and the Human Rights Act

• ability to provide  specialist technical expertise and advice on equality and human rights law with knowledge and experience in particular of the Equality Act and one other relevant area of law, for example: education, housing, community care, social welfare or similar.

• ability to translate legal concepts into clear, concise language, making recommendations to support decision -making or promote external compliance

• ability to communicate complex legal concepts and advice into accessible, user-friendly documents for both internal and external audiences

• ability to identify and engage with internal and external stakeholders, developing and building effective relationships

You will be required to demonstrate our core skills of leadership, delivery management and stakeholder engagement as well as the core professional skills. . You can find these attached to this advert.
