Chelmsford

Fixed term contract for one year to cover maternity leave

Ref: 000035-17

Anglia Ruskin is a vibrant workplace and our University is gaining prominence both nationally and internationally. We have ambitious plans for the future and we are determined that our students and staff will realise their full potential. Our main campuses in the cities of Cambridge, Chelmsford and Peterborough have been transformed with major capital investment. With an annual turnover of over £200m, we are a major force for higher education and one of the largest universities in the East of England.

We’ve an exciting, one year fixed term, in-house opportunity at our leading business facing University. Our legal requirements reflect our mixture of academic excellence and engagement with the commercial world, making us a lively forward thinking place to work, and the exceptional opportunity to develop a broad range of in-house legal skills and experience.

As Assistant Solicitor, you’ll report to our University Solicitor and provide legal advice independently and as part of a small legal team to internal clients on a wide range of commercial, corporate and property law matters. Key responsibilities will include drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements so you’ll need to have excellent drafting and other technical legal skills. You’ll also be responsible for the day to day management of your own legal files. You'll have a working knowledge of intellectual property law, and you’ll help to ensure that we’re compliant with our legal and regulatory obligations so we can withstand scrutiny by relevant external bodies as well as legal challenges.

You’ll be a current UK qualified solicitor or legal executive who has ideally had strong training from a recognised private practice law firm, although all background experience will be considered. You’ll have post qualification experience although applications from keen and interested newly qualified solicitors with less experience will also be considered. We provide a supportive environment in which to progress and reach your potential.

You’ll be a good communicator who is able to explain complex legal issues to non-legal colleagues and will be comfortable dealing, at short notice, with often unpredictable legal issues. You’ll also have strong commercial acumen and a definite “can do “attitude.

We offer an extensive range of benefits including a generous holiday entitlement, occupational pension schemes, training and development opportunities, travel to work scheme and a competitive relocation package.

Apply online via our website.

Closing date: 18 August 2017.

We will be holding interviews week commencing 4 September 2017.

Possible start date is 25 September 2017.

We value diversity at Anglia Ruskin University and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
