Starting Salary Qualified Lawyer £37,922- £43,641

Kent Trading Standards is a large dynamic, innovative service dedicated to protecting the interests of consumers and businesses across the County, with its own in-house legal team 

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for a legal officer to join this independent team, based in Ashford, Kent. The role is open to both qualified lawyers and those with extensive experience of case management and progression for court, in particular those with a Local Government Regulatory or Trading Standards background.  

The successful applicant will be dedicated to dealing with a varied caseload of mainly criminal but also some civil litigation (including proceeds of crime), preparing cases for court, and also providing legal advice, guidance and support to the Trading Standards Service.

In addition the applicant will be expected to provide broader advice on public law, regulatory law and FOI/DPA as needed by the Service.

Applicants who are qualified lawyers will also be required to manage a caseload with minimal supervision and conduct advocacy at court on behalf of Trading Standards, which is reflected in the starting salary. 

You must therefore demonstrate the following:

• Experience of advising on a wide range of criminal/regulatory and/or general legal matters;
• Strong presentation skills; and
• Recent knowledge of criminal and regulatory law in Trading Standards or another public protection service, and local government law.
• In addition those applying for and holding a relevant legal qualification, will be expected to demonstrate experience of managing and conducting a wide range of criminal and civil matters;

The ability to travel across a wide geographical area in a timely and flexible manner at various times of the day is essential.
