Shape the future of your legal career with The Insolvency Service

Within The Insolvency Service – which is an Executive Agency of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) – we currently have scope for one temporary and three permanent Prosecution Lawyers to join us. This is a government agency that tackles financial wrongdoing, helping to maximise returns to creditors and supporting those in financial distress. Spanning a huge spectrum of areas, our work touches everything from redundancy issues, to fraudulent trading and criminal behaviour. As such, this is a dynamic team that is exposed to a multitude of challenges – and now you can join us, in a role that is undeniably career-defining.

Working within the Criminal Enforcement Team on a broad selection of criminal justice cases connected to individual and corporate insolvency proceedings and associated corporate fraud, you will see a case through its entire cycle – from initial investigation, right through to enforcement actions such as confiscation and asset recovery. Forming close working relationships with a variety of stakeholders such as investigators and agent solicitors, your advice on the conduct of investigations will ensure case strategies are tightly formed, resulting in effective prosecutions. You will also prosecute matters stemming from BEIS’s regulatory functions, and undertake advocacy where appropriate. Supporting your prosecution colleagues in any cross-Whitehall initiatives, you will offer advice on the drafting of new criminal offences and enforcement strategies, shaping the future of criminal law.

To thrive in this varied role, you will need to have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with the willingness to travel to court and regional offices. As an experienced prosecutor who is qualified to work in England and Wales, you will have a thorough understanding of criminal law with specific reference to disclosure, procedure, evidence and confiscation, and you will have the ability to comprehensively grasp new areas of law. If you have knowledge of confiscation work and asset recovery, that would be hugely advantageous, and your enthusiasm for working in a progressive environment will make you an essential part of the team during an exciting period of change.

This is a unique opportunity to join us at a definitive point in our evolution, with the Criminal Enforcement Team only having become a part of the Insolvency Service this year. So please do get in touch specifying whether you’d like to be considered for the temporary or permanent positions. For the temporary position, we’d be happy to consider a fixed term contract or a secondment/loan, giving you a taste of just what this team is capable of.

Company

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall Departments.   From roads to rivers, and health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life.

The department has more than 14 client-facing advisory teams who provide legal advice on the development, design and implementation of government policies and decisions, draft secondary legislation and work with Parliamentary Counsel on primary legislation.  Our cross-cutting expert service groups for Litigation, Employment and Commercial Law provide specialist legal services to a wide range of government departments and public bodies.

We are a non-ministerial government department with more than 2,300 employees, around 1,800 of whom are solicitors or barristers. The department is based primarily in London but has teams in Bristol, Manchester, and Leeds.

As an organisation our vision is to be trusted by government to provide consistently excellent and value for money services so government departments want to come to us to meet their legal needs, to be known throughout the legal profession for the quality of our legal work, and to be the best employer for our people.
