Part-time

Ref: WARW000003450

Warwickshire Legal Services has operated on a business footing for over 20 years and now has over 60 fee earners providing a comprehensive range of services to over 15 public sector clients, including pioneering shared service arrangements with Warwick District Council and two police forces.

We have a national reputation, recognised in several national awards, as well as modern offices in a historic building in the middle of Warwick within a short distance of other popular towns like Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Stratford-upon-Avon and in a central location on road and rail transport networks. We offer flexible working arrangements and in return our staff are willing to go the extra mile when our clients need it.

People like to work for us and we have a tradition of growing our own talent through training and development schemes, meaning that we have a low turnover of staff. However, following the retirement of the post-holder, we are now looking for a solicitor or barrister to join our team on a permanent basis.

The post is offered part-time for between 18.5 and 25 hours per week, the contractual hours to be a matter for negotiation. Candidates will be asked to specify on application the number of hours that they would be seeking to work. We are looking for candidates who are first rate lawyers and who solve problems, inspire client confidence, welcome change and challenge, and have the potential to progress within our business.

The core work of the Planning & Litigation Team is Criminal and Civil Litigation, Housing, Planning, Highways and Licensing. Its responsibilities include advising committees, regulatory enforcement, drafting and negotiating planning and highway agreements, local authority prosecutions, strategic housing advice, housing possessions, anti-social behaviour injunctions and other regulatory matters. You may regularly be required to act as legal adviser at committee meetings and to appear in court and at inquiries. The post carries an emphasis on housing advice and litigation, but you may also be called upon to handle other litigation, both civil and criminal and you will also be asked to provide general legal advice on a wide range of local authority matters.

The work is demanding and often complex and you will need a flexible, positive approach and a keen mind. Local authority experience would be an advantage but the right candidate might be a quick learner from a different background.

You should be a fully qualified practising solicitor or barrister with an understanding of public law principles.

For further information about the role please contact Ann Belcher on 01926 412451 or John Gregory on 01926 414132.

Closing date: 17 August 2017.
