Assistant Legal Adviser

About the Foreign & Commonwealth Office

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) promotes the United Kingdom's interests overseas, supporting our citizens and businesses around the globe.  The FCO has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing over 14,000 people in nearly 270 diplomatic offices.  We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Commonwealth.

The role of Assistant Legal Adviser

The FCO’s Legal Directorate advises on all legal matters affecting the work of the FCO, both domestic and international. As an Assistant Legal Adviser, we will expect you to advise on a range of questions of public international law, as well as domestic law. It is a varied role where you could be called upon to do everything from drafting legislation to handling litigation in domestic or international courts. You will also be expected to represent the UK at bilateral and multi-national meetings and negotiations.

You can expect to spend around 3 years in one of our teams – National Security, EU and Human Rights, Foreign Relations, International Institutions and Security Policy, or Overseas Territories and Maritime - before moving to another role, enabling you to acquire a broad range of legal experience. It is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience as you work on various projects and assignments, and really make a difference to the future of the FCO’s Legal Directorate.

What we are looking for

To join us, you will need to be a fully-qualified barrister or solicitor with significant practice or legal study experience in public international law, European Union law, human rights law, public law or the law relating to the United Kingdom’s overseas territories. The ability to make effective decisions is vital, as is being able to work collaboratively as part of a team to deliver a quality service. We also expect you to have an Upper Second-Class Honours degree.
