Legal Officer - Legislation

Pay Span 33; Salary range starts at £59,853

Background Information & Notes for Applicants

The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency with its own parliament, government and laws.

The Attorney General’s Chambers provides a legislative drafting service for all Government Departments, Statutory Boards and Offices of the Isle of Man Government.

Our team of 5 Drafters and 2 legal officers and an information officer aims to cover most areas of law required by the jurisdiction. This role presents a challenging and interesting opportunity to develop drafting skills and work with many specialised areas of Government to support a busy legislative change programme.

The team also manages the availability and further development of the Isle of Man Statutes on-line, which provides an important free service to the Island’s community and international stakeholders.

This is a permanent position which requires a self-motivated Solicitor, Barrister or Advocate, preferably with at least 5 years PQE in a commonwealth jurisdiction. Strong legal research skills would also be helpful in this role. As a senior civil servant the role holder will also be required to provide sound impartial advice and build productive working relationships to support colleagues across Government in the modernisation of the legislation.

A defined benefit pension scheme is available to Isle of Man public servants. Please note a work permit and satisfactory police check may be required for this position.

Further information about this vacancy is available David Bermingham, Chief Legislative Drafter, on +44 (0) 1624 685451 or email david.bermingham@attgen.gov.im
