Welsh Government Legal Services Department – Lawyers

Executive Band 2 (EB 2) - £48,650 rising in stages over 3 years to £56,900

Legal Officer (Management Band 1) - £43,950

The Welsh Government offers lawyers a unique opportunity to work within a dynamic environment that places them at the heart of devolved government, projects of national significance and profile, at the cutting edge of major constitutional developments, including the significant challenges raised by withdrawal from the European Union and at the forefront of the policy and law making process.

We are looking for Solicitors or Barristers or Chartered Legal Executives with a strong interest in public law and an appreciation of the devolution settlement in Wales to work in the largest public sector legal department in Wales. You may already be a public law practitioner, however if not, we are still interested in hearing from practitioners with experience in other fields who have the intellectual capacity and commitment to learn quickly and deploy their transferable skills and experience as a foundation for developing a new career as a government lawyer. Although public and administrative law is at the core of what we do, we also operate in more specific and specialised areas such as landlord and tenant law, public procurement, planning, health, education law and taxation (this list is by no means exhaustive) and we are seeking to fill a number of posts in a variety of areas across the Legal Services Department.  Welsh language skills, although desirable, are not required to work in the Welsh Government. The exercise will seek to identify a number of successful applicants either for posting immediately or for posting to opportunities that arise over the ensuing 12 months.  In addition to permanent opportunities, candidates will be invited to indicate on application whether they would also be interested in fixed term opportunities (with the possibility of permanency) or whether they are in a position to consider a secondment opportunity. The posts will be essentially Cardiff-based as part of the civil service and benefits include a variety of working patterns and working arrangements, 31 days leave per annum and membership of the civil service pension scheme.

If you would be interested in applying for a lawyer post within Legal Services please visit the internet portal included below for further details and access to the online application process.  Applications will be considered by an appointed Selection Panel.

We particularly welcome applications from disabled people, LGBT people and BAME people.

Please note that in the event of there being a large number of applicants, applications will be assessed in the first instance on the basis of evidence provided in relation to the job specifics criteria.  Applications from candidates that fail to satisfy our requirements against the job specifics will not be assessed further.

To gain more information on working for the Welsh Government and on the role of Welsh Government lawyers, interested candidates are cordially invited to our Open Day at our Welsh Government London office anytime between 11:00 and 15:00 hrs  at, 25 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0EX or at Crown Buildings, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NQ on 17th August 2017.

Closing date: 31st August 2017.

For further information and application, visit www.wales.gov.uk/recruitment or email HR-Helpdesk@gov.wales

The Welsh Government is an Equal Opportunities and Disability Confident Employer.

Alternatively applicants, including applicants who have a disability and who require reasonable adjustments to be made in the application process, can obtain further information and an application form by calling the HR Helpdesk on 029 2082 5454.

Appointments to Legal Officer will be made where successful candidates have less than three years’ post qualification experience. Candidates appointed as a Legal Officer will be eligible to re-grade to EB2 when they reach one years’ service or three years’ post qualification experience, whichever comes sooner (subject to satisfactory performance).

Company

The Welsh Government is the devolved Government for Wales. We are working to help improve the lives of people in Wales and make our nation a better place in which to live and work.

The Welsh Government consists of:

  • The First Minister
  • Welsh Ministers
  • The Counsel General
  • Deputy Ministers

They are supported by civil servants who work across devolved areas that include key areas of public life such as health, education and the environment.

We aim to be open and responsive to the needs of citizens and communities and are one of the few governments in the world that publishes Cabinet minutes and papers. Responsibility for most key areas of public life including health, education and environment is devolved.

With offices across Wales, including Merthyr Tydfil, Aberystwyth and Llandudno Junction, we are getting closer to the people we serve.
