Do you have what it takes to join the UK’s leading in-house police legal team?

The Metropolitan Police Service is dealing with huge and important challenges. We need high quality lawyers to help us achieve our aims.

The Team

Working alongside more than 45 experienced lawyers and with the support of paralegals and administrative staff, you will be based in the heart of the legal community and will provide high quality legal services to more than 50,000 officers and staff. The Directorate of Legal Services (DLS) has been acting for the Commissioner on legal matters since 1935 whether in an advisory capacity or through representation at courts, tribunals and, as necessary, public inquiries. The team ensures the cost effective provision of an agreed range of  legal services to the Met, one of the oldest and most famous police services in the world, which best supports its aims and corporate objectives.

The Role

DLS advises on a range of matters including high profile investigations, civil litigation, public law challenges, inquests and inquiries, employment law, discrimination, information law and operational policing matters including advice on counter-terrorism. The role requires you to be able to analyse information critically, provide effective written and oral advice, organise a complex workload and work collaboratively with a variety of colleagues and other stakeholders in a publicly accountable environment. It’s more important for you to have the aptitude and potential to thrive in this environment rather than particular previous experience.

The Candidate

We are looking for able lawyers with a “can-do” attitude and who are completely unfazed by pressure. With an ability to carry a varied and heavy caseload you will be a qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales who has completed a training contract or pupillage (or has been exempted from this by the Law Society or Bar Council). Being highly organised, working with minimum supervision and meeting tight deadlines are crucial for this role. You should also be able to display sound judgement and analytical skills.

In return you can expect a rewarding career in the country’s biggest in-house police team as part of an organisation that recognises the importance of work/life balance and that offers a range of attractive benefits and a friendly and supportive work environment.

For further details please visit our website or download a role specific information pack. If you would like to discuss this opportunity please contact Ms Naz Saleh on 020 7230 7378.

To apply please complete the application form and provide a CV together with a short statement (no more than 500 words) on what you can offer and why you feel you have the necessary skills for the role. You should include details of your SRA number and the date you were admitted to the Law Society or Bar membership number and Year of Call, as appropriate.

Completed applications by 4pm on Thursday 24th August 2017.

We view diversity as fundamental to our success. To tackle today’s complex policing challenges, we need a workforce made up from all of London’s communities. Applications from across the community are therefore essential.

Company

London is one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world – and policing it is no easy task. It takes a huge number of people from all sorts of different backgrounds with a wide range of skills and experience. Do you have what it takes to be one of them?

Working for the Met doesn’t have to mean patrolling the streets. Just as important as our uniformed officers is our 14,000-strong team of professional and support staff working behind the scenes. It’s these skilled people who provide the organisational capability to police London.
