Job Title:  Pro Bono Supervising Solicitor – Legal Advice Clinic (Family)
Location:  Holborn, London
Contract type:  Permanent, Part time (3 days)

Who we are

BPP University is the UK’s only university solely dedicated to business and the professions.  We are dedicated to preparing students for a professional career and our programmes are designed in partnership with employers and respected professionals in the fields of law, business, finance and health.

The BPP Legal Advice Clinic has been in operation since March 2004 as one of many projects within the BPP Pro Bono Centre.  Its dual goals are to provide free legal advice to the community and to provide law students with the opportunity to obtain practical legal experience. Students provide free legal advice and representation to members of the public under the supervision of the Pro Bono Centre Supervising Solicitor and external practising solicitors.

BPP University’s Pro Bono Centre’s projects all involve engaging law students to volunteer their legal skills and knowledge to help members of the public who might not otherwise have access to such assistance.  The appointed candidate will have knowledge of all of the Centre’s projects, but will most likely be involved with the following:

  • BPP Legal Advice Clinic (Family).
  • Tribunal Services
  • Any of the Centre’s other projects as may be required from time to time.

 What you’ll do

We are looking for a solicitor or barrister to help supervise and manage the Legal Advice Clinic (Family) and other pro bono projects at BPP Law School. The Centre’s projects all involve engaging law students to volunteer their legal skills and knowledge to help members of the public who might not otherwise have access to such assistance.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • To supervise the work of students involved with BPP’s Legal Advice Clinic (BLAC) (Family) both pro bono and as part of the CLE module of the LLM;
  • To work closely with the Trainee Solicitor (Clinic Manager) to ensure that the clinic runs effectively;
  • To be a Centre staff contact for our students in the Holborn campus working with the existing staff;
  • To manage some of the Centre’s projects from Holborn;
  • To supervise some of the students’ work on the Centre’s various projects;
  • To assist with the development of pro bono in other sites.

 You will work closely with the Directors of Pro Bono, Pro Bono Supervising Solicitors and Pro Bono Trainee Solicitor, and the Centre’s Administrator.

Role requirements

  •  Qualification as a solicitor/barrister in England & Wales
  • Ideally have proficiency and experience in family law
  • Have a passion for working with students and dedicated to providing a stimulating learning environment for students
  • An understanding of and commitment to the roles of both clinics and pro bono in the provision of legal services
  • Excellent organisational and management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written skills and ability to convey complex information in an accessible way
  • An ability to explain the law clearly and simply both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to prioritise tasks
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to use computer and information technology
  • Confident public speaker or desire to develop
  • Good networking skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work on own initiative

 The successful candidate will be required to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.
