The British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional association and trade union for doctors and medical students in the UK. It has a prominent and influential position at the very heart of current debate over the future of healthcare provision. The BMA speaks for doctors at all stages of their careers and is a leading voice on a wide range of professional and political issues affecting medicine and health.

We are looking for a Senior Policy Advisor to join the international and immigration team. Your role will include, along with other areas of focus, providing expert policy advice and guidance on UK immigration policy relating to Brexit, and legislation to a variety of audiences including senior staff, committees, and chief officers. You will analyse and develop policy proposals, produce briefings, guidance and other practical support materials and represent the BMA at external meetings, conferences and other events, as required. It will be essential to also have experience of evidence-based policy development, knowledge of the immigration system and legal issues.

You will have excellent writing skills, sound judgement and be adept at delivering presentations, influencing senior figures and managing relationships. A comprehensive knowledge of healthcare settings and health policy, would be desirable.

  • Ability to challenge and respond constructively to policy proposals produced by government, NHS England or other stakeholders, based on analysis of evidence, options considered, risk and benefits of proposals.
  • Developing consultation documents on policy options, risks and benefits for engagement with members, using digital and other channels of communication.
  • Ability to form strategic relationships with counterparts in stakeholder organisations.
  • Understanding of the association`s dual roles as trade union and professional body.
  • Initiating and taking forward work in relevant policy areas
  • Keeping under review developments and anticipating areas on which doctors will need support.
