Head of Legal Affairs, UK and Ireland

Abbott Laboratories

Maidenhead, Berkshire

£Competitive, with bonus & long-term incentives

At Abbott, we're committed to helping you live your best possible life through the power of health. For more than 125 years, we've brought new products and technologies to the world -- in nutrition, diagnostics, medical devices and branded generic pharmaceuticals -- that create more possibilities for more people at all stages of life. Today, 94,000 of us are working to help people live not just longer, but better, in the more than 150 countries we serve.

We are now recruiting for an experienced lawyer and people manager to join us on a permanent basis.

Reporting to the Legal Director, North & Western EMEA, and based in our UK Head Office in Maidenhead, you will work alongside our business divisions to provide commercial legal advice and support to Abbott’s businesses based in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the wider EMEA region.

Whether your experience has been gained in private practice (perhaps with a secondment into the healthcare industry), or you have a proven track record in an in-house role in a regulated industry, this is a great career-development opportunity for a technically-strong and commercially-savvy senior lawyer to join a $20bn global healthcare business.

It’s an exciting time to join our EMEA International Legal Operations team. Your day-to-day duties will include analysis and provision of legal advice focused on business-oriented solutions on a wide range of matters, including general commercial, public healthcare procurement, distribution arrangements, medical device compliance and manufacturing as required.  You will assist in developing Legal services support systems for the businesses and educating business teams on legal-related issues, and an important part of your role will be to manage and develop a small UK-based country team.

In addition to managing and developing your direct report(s), you will have the opportunity to grow and develop your career with us, potentially both within the EMEA region and beyond.

To be successful, you will need to have previous management experience (such as junior lawyers, paralegals, or contract managers), and substantial proven post-qualification experience. This will need to include strong experience in general commercial law, excellent drafting, negotiation, and client communication skills, and preferably proven experience with public procurement law.

You will also need to be highly motivated and enthusiastic with demonstrated initiative, adaptability and integrity, with strong communication skills, a cultural sensitivity to working in a multi-national company and the ability to work effectively in teams.

Healthcare, medical devices or pharmaceutical industry experience would be advantageous, but we will also be interested to hear from experienced lawyers looking to move from other highly-regulated industries.

In addition to a competitive salary and performance bonus scheme, Abbott offers a highly attractive benefits package which includes a long-term incentive scheme, a defined-contribution pension scheme, a share ownership scheme, private healthcare, life assurance, and a flexible benefits scheme which you can tailor to your own requirements.
