Senior Solicitor and Team Leader (Planning & Litigation)

£46,580 - £52,789 per annum

Ref: WARW000003664

Warwickshire Legal Services is the successful in-house legal service of Warwickshire County Council and we are looking for a solicitor or barrister with at least five years’ relevant PQE to lead our Planning & Litigation Team.

We have operated on a business footing for over 20 years and provide a wide range of services to over 15 public sector clients including two police forces, police and crime commissioners and a pioneering shared service arrangement with Warwick District Council. We have over 60 fee earners, a £4.5 million turnover and have recently established an alternative business structure to support our ambitious plans for further growth.

We rarely use external solicitors, meaning that our lawyers have the chance to lead on the most high profile and challenging work. People like to work for us, and stay with us, and we have a tradition of growing talent through career development and training. You will be based in a historic building in the centre of Warwick with free onsite parking, supported by model office facilities, a secretarial and paralegal team and the latest IT. We offer flexible working arrangements and in return our staff are willing to go the extra mile when our clients need it.

The Role

You will be jointly responsible with an existing senior solicitor for leading, developing and supervising a team of nine solicitors, a legal executive and a trainee solicitor dealing with planning, highways, housing, civil litigation, licensing and other regulatory functions. Nothing is more important to us than our people and you will be someone who knows how to help them fulfil their potential.

You will be personally responsible for high profile and complex work and will engage directly with the most senior councillors and officers in our client organisations. You will advise committees, provide training and undertake advocacy. You will have a high level of accountability, independence and self-confidence as well as the drive and vision to keep our business growing, innovating and improving.

Key Requirements

In order to meet these challenges, you will need five years' post-qualification experience as a solicitor or barrister including substantial and up-to-date planning experience and experience of advocacy. Whilst local authority and management experience would be advantages, they are not essential: if you have the potential, we will see it and give you the support you need to realise it. What matters is that you are someone who will inspire client confidence, deliver results and get the best from your team.

Rewards & Benefits of working for Warwickshire

It really is true that every single job role here at Warwickshire County Council contributes to bettering the lives of the people in our County; we want to do this for our employees, too. We are proud of our strong flexible working culture, including the opportunity for flexibility on working hours, technology to support remote working (such as light laptops and phones where the role allows).

Time to recharge is so important; we provide a generous holiday allowance which rises as you remain in employment with us. You get all Bank and public holidays off, plus all staff are given an extra day of holiday over Christmas.

As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also have access to membership of the Local Government contributory pension scheme, childcare vouchers, a host of enhanced family friendly policies and some of the very best Learning and Development training courses to support your ongoing development.

Company

Warwickshire Legal Services has operated on a business footing for over 20 years and now has over 60 fee earners providing a comprehensive range of services to over 15 public sector clients, including pioneering shared service arrangements with Warwick District Council and two police forces.  We have ambitious plans for further growth and we rarely outsource work, meaning that our lawyers are trusted to lead even the most challenging legal projects for a wide range of public sector bodies.  As a result, we offer unrivalled opportunities to develop highly marketable skills with the support of experienced colleagues who consistently earn very high satisfaction ratings from their clients.

We have a national reputation, recognised in several national awards, as well as modern offices in a historic building in the middle of Warwick within a short distance of other popular towns like Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Stratford-upon-Avon and in a central location on road and rail transport networks.  We offer flexible working arrangements, supported by the latest ICT, and in return our staff are willing to go the extra mile when our clients need it.

People like to work for us and we have a tradition of growing our own talent through training and development schemes, meaning that we have a low turnover of staff.  As part of our planned expansion we are recruiting an additional Solicitor within the Corporate and Commercial Team.
