Before Covid-19, working from home was the exception to the rule and decidedly not the norm - especially for law firms. However, since the first lockdown in March the legal industry has adapted to new ways of working and embraced homeworking, with some city firms even making plans for a permanent switch. Even before the second national lockdown was announced in November, data from the Office for National Statistics showed that the number of people working exclusively from home rose, month on month, from 21% to 24% in September 2020.
As with all major changes, remote working has divided opinion and has its benefits and drawbacks, but the majority of legal workers say working from home has improved their work-life balance, and almost half are “dreading going back to the workplace”. Productivity seems to have increased too – a study by researchers at Cardiff University and the University of Southampton show that productivity among the majority of those working from home during lockdown remained stable or even improved, compared to six months before.
