What Not to Do in a Legal Interview: Tips for Lawyers

What NOT to do in an interview

While an impressive CV can get you through the door of a law firm, the real test comes during the interview. This is the opportunity to prove to a potential employer that you’re the right lawyer for the job. However, common mistakes during interviews can hinder your chances of success. Here are some of the most frequent pitfalls to avoid when attending a legal interview.

1. Arriving Late Without a Valid Reason

Punctuality is key. Arriving late without good reason can create a negative first impression before the interview even begins. If you do find yourself running behind, apologise sincerely upon arrival. Failing to acknowledge your lateness may leave a lasting poor impression.

2. Dressing Inappropriately

Professionalism starts with your appearance. Make sure you dress the part, looking polished and well-groomed. Avoid bringing unnecessary items, such as gym bags or takeaway coffee cups, into the interview room—they can signal that the interview isn’t your priority.

3. Avoiding Eye Contact

Maintaining eye contact shows engagement and confidence. If you’re being interviewed by multiple people, ensure you make eye contact with everyone in the room, not just the lead interviewer.

4. Displaying Closed-Off Body Language

Your body language speaks volumes. Slouching, crossing your arms, or fidgeting can suggest disinterest or nervousness. Instead, sit upright, keep your palms open, and smile appropriately to convey confidence and enthusiasm.

5. Talking Too Much—or Too Little

It’s important to strike the right balance in an interview. Being overly chatty or sharing irrelevant details can come across as unfocused. Conversely, providing short, unengaging answers won’t showcase your personality or suitability for the role. Be concise but thorough, and let your enthusiasm for the opportunity shine.

6. Dodging Difficult Questions

If you’re unsure about an answer, be honest. Evading tough questions or giving vague responses can make you seem unprepared or untrustworthy. Acknowledge when you don’t know something and explain how you’d approach finding a solution.

7. Speaking Negatively About Your Current Job

Criticising your current or previous roles can come across as unprofessional. Even if you’re eager to move on, focus on why you’re excited about the new opportunity rather than dwelling on dissatisfaction with your current situation.

8. Forgetting to Silence Your Phone

A ringing phone during an interview is distracting and can disrupt the flow of the conversation. Ensure your phone is silenced or turned off before you step into the room.

9. Asking About Salary Too Early

While compensation is an important factor, asking about salary and benefits in the interview can signal that you’re more interested in the pay than the role itself. Leave these conversations to your recruitment consultant, who can handle negotiations on your behalf.
