Job Details

The Commission is recruiting for a lawyer to join its in-house Legal Team as a Legal Counsel. The successful candidate will be a qualified lawyer holding a practising certificate in either the United Kingdom, a Commonwealth country, or in another common law jurisdiction. They will need to demonstrate:

  • 3+ years’ post-qualification experience, preferably with experience in regulatory law and practice, financial services law, or company and commercial law;  
  • an ability to provide practical and pragmatic legal advice at a pace, and to communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues at all levels;
  • excellent decision making and negotiation skills, along with a positive ‘can do’ attitude; and  
  • an ability to take personal responsibility for their own workload, and to manage competing priorities in a flexible way.

The Legal Team provide legal advice to support the Commission’s regulatory and supervisory activities and provide assistance on enforcement activities. The team assist with policy development; advise on ad hoc day to day operational matters; advise on or assist with the drafting of Commission rules, regulations and ordinances, and laws which relate to the Commission; liaise with external legal advisors, legislative drafters and external industry bodies; and undertake litigation work.

The Commission supervises and regulates over 2,000 licensees from within the banking, fiduciary, insurance, and investment sectors. We do this in accordance with standards set by international bodies such as the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision, the International Association of Insurance Supervisors, the International Organization of Securities Commissions, and the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering.
