About the Care Quality Commission (CQC)

CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. We make sure health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and we encourage care services to improve. We monitor, inspect and regulate services to ensure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety and we publish what we find to help people choose care. People work at CQC because they believe we make a positive difference to people’s lives and we have a strong set of values which everyone in CQC helped to develop.

Following a restructure within the Governance and Legal Services directorate we are looking to recruit an additional Head of Governance and Legal Services.  We are looking for a talented and experienced lawyer to join our leadership team, and work with us to ensure our directorate change programme carries us through the life of the current CQC strategy whilst meeting CQC’s commitment to deliver efficiencies.

About the role

As part of CQC’s Governance & Legal Services Team in this role you will lead the delivery of all aspects of the Governance and Legal Services directorate to support CQC in its regulation of health and social care.  You will work closely with your leadership team colleagues to lead a broad range of legal and governance functions, which include the complaints and ratings review teams.  We want to strengthen connections across the directorate, and you will use your leadership skills to support all our teams in working together to meet our strategic priorities.

About you

As a Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with 10+ years post qualification experience you will have a strong background in public law.  You will have significant experience of delivering legal and/or governance functions in an in-house or equivalent setting as well as considerable experience of leading and managing teams.

Inspiring others through their own individual performance in support of the delivery of CQC's regulatory model, being open to constructive challenge and feedback, you will set a compelling vision and direction for stakeholders and our teams.  You will be required to drive teams to strive to achieve challenging performance standards, to deliver with a sense of urgency, and to demonstrate resilience.

Representing CQC internally and externally as an effective and independent regulator for health, mental health and adult social care you will be required to apply sound judgement to make difficult decisions, taking responsibility for resolution of issues.

As an experienced senior leader and manager you will be supporting others to improve and grow, translating strategic priorities into tangible personal objectives and ensuring application of effective performance management practices.

Underpinning all of the above, we expect you to be committed to CQC’s values of Excellence, Caring, Integrity and Teamwork.
