St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500. It is poised for transformation with the beginning of air access due to be operational in the last quarter of 2017.

As Attorney General you will be the principal legal adviser to the Governor and Governments of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. You will be responsible for all criminal proceedings and be the nominal party in civil litigation by or against the Crown. In addition, you will have overall responsibility for legislative drafting and for keeping laws up to date.

Your functions and responsibilities are contained in the Constitution, various Ordinances and Common Law. You will offer comprehensive, reliable and timely legal advice to all organs of the respective Governments, responding pro-actively to issues as they arise or emerge. You will lead institutional development of the Attorney General’s Chambers and address strategic future legal needs of the island. In addition to purely legal work, you will be one of the senior advisers to the Governor on a wide range of issues.

The Attorney General’s Chambers is currently made up of the AG and Crown Counsel (Community Care), Crown Counsel (Civil), Crown Prosecutor, a Legal Executive, two trainee solicitors and a PA. There is a full-time Legislative Drafter who works remotely and the Crown Counsel based on Ascension. The post of Solicitor General is currently being advertised.

As an experienced UK qualified barrister or solicitor with at least 10 years call / PQE, you will have experience as a court advocate in civil and criminal litigation, be computer literate, and have the ability to mentor junior staff. Your strong analytical and communication skills should be complemented by a flexible approach. Experience within an Overseas Territory and having already worked in a small and isolated community although not essential, are desirable.
