The Government Legal Department (GLD) is made up of around 1,600 Solicitors and Barristers, from roads to rivers, and health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. As the main provider of legal advice to the Government, we are committed to developing our staff and enhancing their career potential, resulting in a dynamic working atmosphere that is quite unique. The Employment Law Group is an important part of GLD, and we are expanding our presence in Leeds by making an additional 7 appointments at our qualified lawyer level. As such, it’s a really exciting time to join us.
In these interesting roles, you will have the opportunity to work on a broad scope of projects such as large-scale multi-party litigation, or the legalities of insourcing and outsourcing contracts involving staff transfers. Providing advice to the Cabinet Office and Civil Service Employee Policy on overarching employment issues, you will also be tasked with the complexities of Human Resource issues including individual cases and guiding colleagues on departmental restructures. You will also work on high profile challenges such as departmental policy issues, covering off topics such as prison reform. With the opportunity to join us as either a Grade 7 Lawyer or a Legal Officer, your career progression is guaranteed in this fast-paced team.
Appointments are offered full-time or through a range of flexible working options. You will succeed if you have the drive and ambition to deliver a high-quality service across a range of challenges. You should be (or be on the verge of becoming) a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales, ideally with a 2.1 degree or better, but this is not essential if you evidence high level academic and/or professional achievement. With good verbal and written communication skills, your ability to impart clear advice will prove crucial, as will your appreciation of legal risk and quality legal judgement.
