Salary: £37,252 - £40,491 pa (a scale increase is available for exceptional candidates)

We are currently looking for a qualified solicitor or barrister with a current practising certificate, to join our in-house legal team in providing an effective and proactive in-house legal function. 

You will be responsible for conducting litigation, including advocacy, on behalf of the Legal Ombudsman.  In addition you will be expected to provide legal advice on the operation of the Ombudsman Scheme and other legal advice within your expertise.

As part of your role you will appear as an advocate on behalf of the organisation in the lower courts, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work towards attaining the Civil Higher Rights of Audience.  You will be responsible for ensuring all paperwork and documents are collated in connection with court and tribunal processes, especially judicial review and enforcement of decisions. 

You will provide general professional support to the legal team, support the paralegal as appropriate and work in collaboration with the organisation in providing in-house training on legal and enforcement topics.

This post is based in Birmingham, however travel will be required to attend courts and meetings with external advisers and other stakeholders, potentially anywhere in UK, but most likely in Birmingham, London, Manchester, Cardiff and Leeds. This post is not suitable for prolonged home working.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Be a qualified solicitor or barrister with a current practising certificate with minimum a five years PQE
  • Have experience of advocacy and appearing in the civil courts
  • Have knowledge of Civil Procedure Rules and civil litigation legal advice
  • Be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Be IT literate and experienced in maintaining databases and researching online.
