We are looking for an experienced Solicitor or Barrister who can demonstrate exceptional commitment and extremely high standards. You will undertake a wide variety of local government work in the areas of FOI, Data Protection, Procurement, Housing, Planning, Environmental Health and civil and criminal litigation, involving some court work from time to time. It is essential that you are able to research and interpret complex areas of law and articulate sound arguments. The work is extremely varied and interesting.

You will be expected to work closely with client departments on a whole range of local government functions exercised by the District Council.

A key feature of this post will be the ability to research and interpret complex areas of law. Whilst experience in these areas of work would be advantageous, the Council would look favourably on applicants who, despite not having relevant experience, can demonstrate exceptional legal skills and a determination to be proficient in such areas. There will be some court work mainly in the County Court on the civil side. You will need to demonstrate that you will be able to undertake this role with confidence and ability.

Legal Services is a small but dynamic team of four Solicitors, and a Legal Assistant, all of whom are highly experienced in their areas of work. Flexibility and a willingness to get on with legal colleagues, officers within client departments and Councillors will be essential.

The successful post holder will be expected to undertake a great variety of work often to strict deadlines and in a pressurised environment.

At NFDC we believe that all our employees make a valuable contribution to the work of the Council. We encourage a trusting and open culture where each employee is supported and respected equally, where ideas are actively sought and self-development promoted. We wish to aspire to the highest standards and are looking for a high calibre lawyer who has the ability to be an excellent local government solicitor.

Benefits include:

• 27 days leave plus an additional 5 days for 5 years’ continuous local authority service

• Parking

• Local Government pension scheme

• Child care voucher scheme

• Employee Assistance Programme (free 24 hour legal, financial and personal advice for employees)

• Car Allowance

If you are interested in this position and meet the criteria, we would be very happy to hear from you. For more information contact Andrew Kinghorn (Service Manager Legal) Tel: 02380 285588.
