The Law Society represents solicitors in England and Wales. From negotiating with and lobbying the profession's regulators, government and other decision makers, to offering training and advice, we're here to support and promote solicitors.

The Law Society operates a number of accreditations to set and maintain professional standards in a specific area of law. The standard is achieved by the Law Society and Chief Assessors working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including members.

We are recruiting for Chief Assessors for the following accreditation schemes:

  • Clinical Negligence
  • Criminal Litigation

The appointment will last for a duration of three years.

The Chief Assessor will receive £550 per day for an expected commitment of 8 days per annum. If the scheme requires significant review during the Chief Assessors appointment, a separate agreement will be reached on the additional number of days work that is required.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Established knowledge, understanding and practising experience in the area(s) of law covered by the accreditation(s) and a strong grasp of the drivers for accreditation

  • Ability to advise on all areas of the relevant accreditation(s) and areas of assessment
  • Good standing, credibility and breadth of experience within the practice area to be able to command the respect of peers and stakeholders
  • Competence and experience relating to designing a variety of assessment tasks, and their marking schemes
  • Ability to work within the parameters of a Quality Assurance Framework, to interpret policies and implement changes accordingly
  • Ability to anticipate and identify at an early stage emerging issues which may have an impact on the accreditation and provide guidance/support to enable the accreditation office teams to respond proactively and appropriately
  • Ability to be objective and discuss issues constructively
